Residents find knitting is a relaxing way to connect with friends
Knitting Enthusiast Denise Stepto starting teaching an evening class at Warren Village for residents earlier this year. Offered twice a month, the knitting class, Chicks with Sticks, is now a favorite among residents.
Denise became involved with Warren Village because she loved to knit and wanted to share something that has meant a lot to her in her life. “Knitting creates a level playing field. Everyone is learning, mistakes are expected, and a community is formed,” shares Denise. “I try to encourage innovative and creative thinking to solve problems. All the while, they talk to each other about raising kids, about paying bills, about classes they are taking. They are encouraging and supportive of each other.”
Warren Village provides a number of evening life skills classes to its residents which are facilitated by volunteers – and attending at least two classes a month is a requirement of living at Warren Village. Knitter and resident Katie shares her experience, “Warren Village has transformed my life. When I first moved in I was completely lost in every aspect. Joining the knitting group gave me a way to relax and forced me into a social setting that I’d never experienced before. I was so shy and now it’s difficult to stop talking.”
Knitters are learning how to make scarfs and blankets – but the sky is the limit when it comes to knitting. The group is currently working on a quilt that will be auctioned off at Warren Village’s upcoming Fabulous at Forty Fall Gala on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Denver Art Museum.
