Gabby’s Story

“Angels on my Side”: Gabby’s Journey from Crisis to Recovery at Warren Village

In October 2024, Gabby B. faced the unthinkable: losing her three-year-old daughter, Philomena.

At the time, she was thriving as a resident at Warren Village. That October, though, she had a serious mental health emergency that left her hospitalized.

It was that moment that she “fell into the arms of Warren Village. I probably would have lost my daughter had it not been for my [family] advocates.”

A Place to Flourish

Gabby and Philomena, both Warren Village residents

Gabby had arrived in Denver eight months pregnant with Philomena in March 2022. Having faced abusive relationships, housing instability and mental health struggles, she had fought hard to claim a sense of stability.

After joining Warren Village in 2024, Gabby quickly became beloved for her infectious energy – the first one to say ‘hi’ to you in the halls. She is a talented artist. Gabby and Philomena were regulars at the Family Nights, too, enjoying the good food, playing with bubbles, and watching circus performers.

At Warren Village, Gabby says she learned to be a better listener, and that it is possible to make positive change. And while she always believed she had a nurturing side, her mothering skills “blossomed when I came to Warren Village… because I had a safe and secure place.”

Philomena, for her part, came to Warren Village somewhat shy. Since her daughter started at the Early Learning Center, though, Gabby saw Philomena become more independent, joyful, and confident. She loves soccer and playing piano, and proudly displays her art on the fridge. She became more curious in the classroom, and adores her teachers.

Then Gabby’s mental health emergency happened. All that she had built was hanging the balance.

“Falling Into the Arms of Warren Village” When Crisis Came

That’s when Gabby’s family advocates swooped in.

Gabby was awed at their professionalism: they swiftly got her the care she needed, retrieved her official documents and organized them, and made sure Philomena had care, too. “I don’t know how they did it,” Gabby says.

As Gabby recovered, Philomena was placed in a foster home. Facing the transition was difficult, but with all that good that Warren Village had done for her, she had faith that the plan that her advocates set out for her family would be the right one. They “really stuck their necks out for me” when she was in trouble, all the while treating her with respect and care, and handling official business behind the scenes with her best interests in mind. “The staff … They are beyond the word ‘wonderful.’”

Gabby praised Philomena’s foster home as a warm, welcoming place, too. “That [foster parent] — she was a great woman.”

Reunion and the Road to Recovery

Gabby, Warren Village resident, with her daughterIn April 2025, Gabby was released from the hospital. She returned to Warren Village, where she had an emotional reunion with her daughter and the community.

But stability meant more than being under the same roof. Gabby was determined to heal, grow, and create a better future for both of them.

She immediately tapped into the resources at Warren Village, including our on-site mental health support. With therapy, parenting groups, and community connections, Gabby began processing her past and planning her future.

Looking Toward the Future

Gabby has since resumed her studies. She hopes to one day be an elementary-school STEM teacher.

And she knows she has work to do. But her advisors have given her structure, and she tries to stay diligent, following the plan. To anyone who may be facing what she faced, she has some advice.

“Listen to your advisor. You have to do the hard, dirty work too …  because…  This whole thing was not a walk in the park. It feels like a walk in the park now because I had angels on my side.”
